GuidesAmsterdam's red-light district versus home visits: what suits whom

· by Editorial team

De Wallen, private locations and home visits compared — what differs in experience, cost, anonymity and legal framework.

Three different models in one city

Amsterdam has historically had three visible forms of sex work — and for clients they differ greatly in experience. De Wallen (De Walletjes) with its window prostitution. Private clubs and houses with on-site reception. And independent escorts who come to the client's hotel or home, or work from their own private location. Anyone using only "red-light district" as a search term mainly gets the first model — while the other two represent the largest share of the market offering in 2026.

This guide compares the three on five criteria: experience, cost, anonymity, legal framework and health. The goal is not to recommend one model, but to make clear which segment suits which type of need. The choice between incall (you go to the provider) and outcall (the provider comes to you) is often decisive — see also our separate comparison of incall and outcall.

1. De Wallen / window prostitution

Experience. Direct, visible, fast. You walk past the windows, choose, pay for a short time block (typically 15 to 30 minutes), and the appointment takes place at the provider's work location. No prior contact, no profile matching, no background check — for those without time or inclination for preparation, that is the appeal.

Cost. €50 to €100 per short block. By far the lowest segment in terms of price.

Anonymity. High in terms of your real identity (no phone number, no email, cash or card), but low in terms of visibility in public space. De Wallen lie in the middle of Amsterdam's tourist heart; residents and tourists walk through. Anyone seeking privacy at street level will not find it here.

Legal. Fully regulated under municipal licensing. Since the lifting of the brothel ban in 2000 this segment has been strictly monitored on age, residence status and working conditions. From 2026 onwards additional rules are on the agenda via the Wet regulering sekswerk — our page on permits and regulated zones covers the current state. The municipality of Amsterdam is actively scaling back De Wallen via the so-called "Erotic Centre" plan, on which the municipality regularly publishes.

Health. The providers are tested routinely, but for clients the same applies: short contacts, often multiple clients per day, and the risk of transmission is statistically higher in this segment. Condom use, however, is higher and more consistent than in other segments — a norm enforced by the working environment.

2. Private clubs and private houses

Experience. A halfway form: you come to a location where multiple providers work, you have a short time to get acquainted in a communal space (a bar or lounge), and choose from there. Time blocks are longer (from one hour upwards), the atmosphere quieter, and the selection more personal. Club concentration has historically been in districts such as parts of Amsterdam West and Zuid.

Cost. €150 to €350 per hour, depending on the club's segment. The mid-tier in terms of price.

Anonymity. Higher than De Wallen — clubs are usually located in residential districts, with on-site parking or an inconspicuous entrance. But lower than a home visit because you still enter a physical location that is known as such.

Legal. Subject to per-municipality licensing. The licence regulates the maximum number of work rooms, age verification and the reporting obligation to the Belastingdienst (tax authority). Working providers are self-employed entrepreneurs with a KvK registration — more on this in our guide on VAT and self-employment for sex workers.

Health. Comparable to De Wallen in terms of provider testing routine, but lower in terms of number of contacts per day. For clients a slightly more favourable risk profile.

3. Home visit or independent escort

Experience. The provider comes to your location — hotel, home, or her own private address. Prior contact through a platform or website, often a short verification (phone number, sometimes ID). The appointment takes place in an environment that you yourself control.

Cost. €200 to €1,500 per hour, with the widest spread of any segment. Lower end: young independent providers. Upper end: high-class, internationally working escorts.

Anonymity. The highest of the three models. No physical location known as a sex work address (in the case of hotel appointments), no acquaintances passing by, and on outcall no public arrival. The trade-off: you do share a phone number or email, and the provider knows where you live or are staying. Our page on making appointments safely online covers how to limit that exposure.

Legal. Independent escorts work under the same law as other self-employed people in the advisory sector — registration with the KvK, VAT return, income tax. The Wet regulering sekswerk introduces a separate permit for self-employed sex workers from 2026 onwards. Our post on escort work and Dutch law has the full legal picture.

Health. Varies considerably per provider. Professional independents follow their own testing schedule and condom routine. When in doubt, ask for a current GGD test result — a serious independent will find that normal.

Which model for which need

There is no objective "best" — it depends on what you are looking for. Our rough summary:

  • Fast, anonymous, low price, no preparation → De Wallen, provided you have no issue with public visibility
  • Personal selection, average price, controllable location → private club
  • Highest privacy, longer time, your own environment → home visit or escort outcall
  • Specific service style such as GFE → almost always home visit or incall with an independent provider; see our guide to the girlfriend experience

Tourist note

For visitors from outside the Netherlands: De Wallen has become a tourist attraction, and the municipality of Amsterdam actively discourages "walking past without ordering". Since 2024 there have been campaigns and rules curbing loitering behaviour. For those who only want to look: that will increasingly not be tolerated from 2026 onwards. Anyone who wants to make an appointment, can — those who only want to be tourists are better served by the Anne Frank House route.
