GuidesIndependent escort versus agency provider: what differs for clients

· by Editorial team

The difference between working through an agency and self-employed escort work translates into concrete differences for clients — style, price, communication.

Two working models

Two working models dominate the Dutch escort sector. The agency model, in which an escort agency brokers between client and provider and takes a margin on the booking. And the independent model, in which the provider works on her own account, manages her own advertisements, accepts her own bookings, and keeps 100% of the hourly rate.

For clients the difference shows up in style, communication, and sometimes price. Knowing which model fits your preferences makes it easier to find a suitable provider. Our page on how an escort agency works covers the agency side; this guide zooms in on the comparison.

Communication and first contact

With an agency booking, first contact runs through a receptionist or matchmaker. That filter performs a client-side assessment — questions about previous experience, what the client is looking for, whether it fits the available supply. The agency then proposes a provider or accepts your preference. You usually receive a short written confirmation with logistical details afterwards.

With an independent escort you communicate directly with the provider. First contact happens via an encrypted messenger or phone, sometimes preceded by a short video call or voice verification. The provider decides for herself whether the match works — no agency intermediary. Advantage: more direct and personal. Disadvantage: you have no independent filter, and if the chemistry does not click there is less room to "match with someone else".

Rate and price structure

The question "which is cheaper" is nuanced. In absolute terms:

  • Agency rate: usually higher on the surface — for example €300/hour. The agency keeps 30–50% of that amount
  • Independent rate: usually lower or comparable — for example €200–€280/hour. The provider keeps the full amount, minus business costs

In practice the difference in absolute cost to the client is minimal. What the client pays an agency is largely for the service of brokering and logistics. For an average €200–€300 booking, it works out to a 10–20% difference at the end — not much.

Where the gap widens: in the high-class segment. International agencies charge rates of €1,000+ per hour, where the administration and the logistics (private jet, hotel rules, security team) themselves cost significantly. Independent providers at the top reach comparable rates without the agency margin — the provider keeps around €700–€800 instead of €500.

Service style

An important difference that clients often underestimate: service style.

  • Agency providers generally work within a professional framework. Time blocks are tight, service packages are defined. Good for clients who value predictability
  • Independent providers more often build long-term clientele relationships that grow personally. Service is more flexible — an appointment can run longer without friction, a specific service can be added on request

For a girlfriend experience (see our GFE guide) independents generally deliver a more authentic experience; agency GFE is available but more often feels like a learned service.

Safety

A common argument for agencies: extra safety. Does that hold up?

  • For clients, agencies offer check-in protocols, monitoring during long appointments, and a second contact point if there are problems. For a first booking with an unknown provider that is genuinely valuable
  • For providers, agencies offer the same check-in function — an appointment is logged at reception, and if the provider does not report in by an agreed time, an active verification follows
  • Independents without an agency have to organise this safety themselves. Many work with a buddy system (a trusted friend or colleague as the check-in contact), but that is less structured than an agency protocol

Our page on making appointments safely online covers the general safety protocols.

Permits and tax

Under the Wet regulering sekswerk the legal landscape changes. From 2026:

  • An agency needs an operating permit, a register of those working there, and must meet workplace-conditions rules
  • An independent escort must register in the national register for self-employed sex workers, with a KvK registration, VAT return, and income tax as a zzp'er

For the full overview see our WRS explainer and the page on VAT and self-employment for sex workers.

How to find a professional independent

Signals that point to a reliable independent provider:

  • Own website or profile page with consistently maintained information (no shifting phone numbers or email addresses)
  • Reviews on multiple platforms that line up in pattern — not identical wording, but the same profile picture
  • KvK number available on request
  • Clear about service style and what is and is not offered
  • First contact via an encrypted channel — Signal, Threema, or a platform messenger
  • Does not ask for advance payment without offering verification in return

Our post on red flags and screening covers the red flags that signal unreliability.

When which model

Simple decision rule:

  • First booking ever → agency. The filter and logistical support lower the threshold
  • Travelling to an unfamiliar city → agency, especially internationally. Local knowledge is valuable
  • Specific profile with limited options → independent. Many niches have no agency offering
  • Longer-term relationship or fixed appointments → independent. Personal chemistry and flexible service weigh more heavily
  • High-end business appointment → agency in the high-class segment. The brokering layer is part of the value there

Combinations

Many clients use both models in parallel — agency for exploration or special occasions, independent for regular bookings. That is not unusual. The escort landscape is not so segmented that a client has to choose one model. Similarly there are providers who work partly through an agency and partly self-employed — especially in the mid segment, where margins allow both channels to be served.
